Diseases as diverse as lupus, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, Hashimoto’s disease, and ulcerative colitis are all lumped together under the term autoimmune disease. These radically different diseases really are mystery afflictions. We know that they occur when your immune system goes rogue and begins attacking your body’s healthy cells as if they were foreign invaders that need to be destroyed. The question is, why does this happen? What causes the immune system to suddenly go berserk and begin attacking the body it’s supposed to protect? In some cases, a triggering cause can be identified, but many cases are mysteries waiting for a solution.
