Hormonally Triggered Depression in Women

It doesn’t seem fair that women are twice as likely to experience depression as men. On top of that, there are certain kinds of depression that only women experience, and that are triggered by the fluctuating hormones women experience throughout their lives. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is most often associated with PMS. But while PMS can lead to symptoms such as moodiness, breast tenderness, and bloating, PMDD, as the more severe form of PMS, can lead to feelings of sadness, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, and insomnia. Perinatal and postpartum depression are serious forms of depression that occur during or after a pregnancy while perimenopausal depression entails symptoms such as trouble sleeping, hot flashes, irregular cycles, and depressive moods in the years leading up to menopause. The hormonal fluctuations that, say, prepare a woman’s body for childbirth take a serious toll, and if a woman is not practicing self-care, it can lead to serious depression and other ill effects. Read more…
